Langkawi retains its position as the most popular beach destination searched among travellers from Malaysia. Its exciting duty-free shopping and rich history that stretches beyond the time of Mahsuri, and maintains it’s strong appeal as a family destination.

The island also features several award-winning hotels, such as one of Hotels.com’s best family hotels this year The Andaman– finely tucked between a 10 million-year-old rainforest and the coral-fringed Datai Bay.

Port Dickson is the second most popular year-end beach destination searched by travellers from Malaysia this year, with its wide variety of resort-style accommodations and villas. The floating villas and private pools of Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson offer an opulent beach getaway just an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur.

Bali’s growing popularity

Leading the growing popularity of overseas beach destinations this year is Indonesia island Bali, attracting tourists from Malaysia to its high-quality resort-style accommodations, vibrant nightlife and rich cultural offerings.

22 properties in Bali won Hotels.com’s Loved by Guests (LBG) Gold awards 2017. 13 of these hotels are located in Ubud, the epicentre of Balinese culture, with its temples and crafts centres. Tejaprana Resort & Spa, one of the LBG winners, features private villas nestled in lush tropical jungles, 4km from Ubud.

While the volcanic activities on Mount Agung have affected tourism sentiment since last week, Bali’s tourism department marked the island as “safe except for areas around Mount Agung”. Popular areas like Ubud, Seminyak and Legian are not affected.

A love for Thai beaches

Travellers from Malaysia love nearby Thai beaches, as Phuket, Krabi, Pattaya and Koh Samui listed within the top 10 year-end beach destinations this year. These beachside towns range from an hour to three hours from Kuala Lumpur making for the perfect weekend getaway.

From the bright lights of Bangla Street to the lively Patong Beach, Phuket is also a popular party destination for young travellers from Malaysia. The island has witnessed a boutique hotel boom, with chic properties like BYD Lofts Boutique Hotel & Serviced Apartments attracting millennial group travellers.

Phuket, together with other top Southern Thailand destinations such as Krabi and Koh Samui are also popular halal destinations for travellers from Malaysia, with their abundance of halal restaurants and Muslim-friendly facilities and hotels. Banyan Tree Samui features halal dining options, female-only spa facilities and alcohol-free villas.
